Title: Ordered for adults, probably better suited for use by children
Review: I ordered this AAC Device for Autism with Grip Handle – 40 Pre-Installed Buttons & 8 Programmable Keys, Non-Verbal Communication Tool for Speech Therapy, Stroke Rehab & Aphasia, Adjustable Volume Talking Aid by HuLiPaLi to assist some of the members at an activity center where I volunteer that is geared toward helping adults with developmental disabilities. This is the second type of this device I ordered for the center to try out. This device is not as popular with the members as the other one is, but does still get used. The “handle” is a very small opening, just enough for a couple of fingers, so adult members don’t enjoy holding this – the shape is awkward to hold in one hand and use the other to push the buttons. The buttons are also a lot smaller than the labels, so sometimes the members find it difficult to get their words out – a problem they are already frustrated with verbally. The range of buttons and having EIGHT recordable buttons is a huge plus for a device at this price point. With the size of this and carrying case, our Case Workers have dubbed this device the “Van AAC” – it lives in the van and comes along for field trips. They’ve started to use a strap through the handle while out of the center so that whoever is using it won’t drop or lose it, which is a much better use of that handle space. It is loud enough to use during activities outside the center such as museums, but not so loud that it disturbs others.

Title: This device is not suitable for older adults
Review: I used this device in a nursing home for older adults of various nationalities who do not speak English as their native language and, due to age-related forgetfulness, have difficulty remembering the words and expressions needed to communicate with staff in English. All of these people are intellectually normal and speak normally with their compatriots in their native languages. My first impression of the device after unpacking it: it’s not heavy, only nine ounces, but the handle hole is tiny, clearly child-sized. Holding the device in the air with this grip is uncomfortable for an adult.Since we only had one device, the staff used it, moving from table to table. The device’s volume was sufficient for people with hearing impairments. The text and the squares with windows (buttons) that need to be pressed for communication were too small and very difficult for older adults to press. It was tough to push the window hard enough when the device was in a horizontal position. It was much easier to get the desired sound from the device when it was lying on a surface. After 4 days of our experiment with the device, we had to abandon it because people lost interest. The fact that our experience was not very successful does not mean the device’s rating should be lowered. Perhaps it could be beneficial for children with specific disabilities. I have left this report on the device’s design features to warn those who, like us, might want to use it for similar purposes with adults.
