Title: Is it worth upgrading? Unfortunately Yes, a very resounding yes!
Review: I’ve had my Kindle since 2013, I’ve probably read over 1,000 books on this little piece of equipment over the past 11 years as it’s been the most convenient piece of electronics I’ve carried with me on my travels. I originally bought my Kindle to replace a Sony e-reader I had because the glare on the Sony version made it impossible to use outside and in brightly lit rooms, upgrading to Amazon’s Kindle was a huge game changer for me.I’ve been resistant to upgrading my Kindle for the past 5 years because, why would I? My 2013 Kindle still works quite well, the battery life is very long, and sure, I need to reboot it every few weeks otherwise it’s too slow to use, and yes, it has issues connecting to my wifi every other month. These were minor inconveniences that didn’t seem to be worth fixing for $150+. Well, I received my new Kindle Paperwhite yesterday and my first thought was – wow, this is a lot lighter. Then I turned it on and I was sold! Lightening fast, responsive, warmer backlight, larger screen, and significantly improved contrast for sharper letters. When I bought my first e-reader in 2011 (Sony), I had to turn it off during take off and landing. We’ve come a long way since then and we know that an e-reader and other small personal electronics don’t impact airplane instruments and you can read away non-stop on flights. If you’re putting off upgrading an old Kindle, and you have the money to do so, don’t wait, this Kindle is far superior to models made over a decade ago; and, if you haven’t done so, connect your Kindle to your local library for essentially an unlimited supply of free reading material.

Title: So long, iPad eye strain — Kindle Paperwhite saves the day!
Review: The Kindle Paperwhite is my first e-reader, and it’s made a massive difference for me. I had been reading on my iPad Pro and my phone, but this soon took a big toll on my eyes since those screens, even at their warmest settings, are still very blue and bright. My job requires me to look at screens all day, so looking at even more screens for reading in my spare time exacerbated my eye strain issues.Enter the Kindle Paperwhite. After much deliberation (and too many sore-eyed reading sessions), I decided to take the plunge. I was initially worried that the surface area wasn’t big enough to avoid eyestrain, but this worry was quickly quelled once I had spent some time with the Kindle. It’s roughly the size of a small-medium book, though words do take up more surface area. This is adjustable, however — the customizability of text is amazing for accessibility, with options of adjusting the size, boldness, font (including fonts designed for dyslexic readers!), and spacing between lines. The ability to fine-tune the color temperature and brightness is a godsend. I typically keep my Kindle on level 9 brightness and level 12-14 warmth; this works for most settings, and works even when I’m reading in low light. You don’t have to go deep into bottomless option menus to find these settings, either — you can adjust on the fly by tapping at the top of the screen and using the sliders there. The e-ink is not as lightning-fast as a smartphone or tablet display, but it’s very responsive and I’m more than satisfied. I’ve known folks who had Kindles since 2012 — they’ve really come a long way!I also love how easily the Kindle integrates with my library’s app for ebooks. From my phone, I can open the app, connect my Amazon account, and the ebook from my library appears instantly on my Kindle.I’ve included photos of my Kindle Paperwhite next to my iPad pro and a mass-market paperback for scale, as well as to compare warmth and brightness. (These pictures are taken in a low-light setting, where I typically read during the evenings.)If you’re debating if the Kindle is right for you, I hope this helps!

Title: So much better than a book!
Review: Honestly, this took me a while to get used to. I’ve been a book worm since I was a young kid and always loved going to the bookstore and browsing for hours. I still love the feel and smell of a book, but after buying my 3rd kindle (gave the other 2 to my kids) I’m totally hooked on this device. The good:1. No more boxes of books to lug around when I move.2. No more dusting bookshelves!3. All my books in the palm of my hand!4. Waterproof. Ever dropped a book in the pool?5. Lightweight, easy to read in bed.6. No more needing a book light or lamp to read in bed or in the dark.7. Works great even outside in the sun.8. Adjustable font size for my old eyes. Don’t need to carry reading glasses with me.9 books are usually cheaper and can be shared across all my kindles.10. Too many good things to list really. I also like that it has a built in dictionary for the rare occasions I don’t know a word (humble brag) also can highlight good quotes and make notes. Also the battery lasts a REALLY long time. I’ve read 2 books this week and still have 60% battery. And I read slow and often backtrack chapters a couple times. The bad:I always liked peeking at someone’s book shelves when I first go to their home. The books people read tell you a lot about them.2. Everyone asking “what are you reading?” Instead of just being able to see the book cover. Maybe this is a good thing though because it’s a conversation opener if you are one of those strange people who like human interaction. That’s really the only downside I can think of. Once you get used to using this instead of a book, you will never look back. Just the space you save in your home and in your luggage when you travel is worth the price of admission.
