Title: Holy moly, the amount of time that reading this book five years ago would have saved me!
Review: Did you know you can scan documents on your phone using Notes (iOS) or Google Drive?! Holy moly, the amount of time that knowing that five years ago would have saved me!It’s too bad my phone can’t print, too, because nothing would make me happier than to never have to rely on my office printer again, but you can bet that the day it can, Joan Green will have already known about it and added it to the latest edition of her awesome book, Assistive Technology in Special Education: Resources to Support Literacy, Communication, and Learning Differences. The book is basically an encyclopedia of today’s education technology: it has everything you’re looking for, plus all the stuff you didn’t know you needed, and a bunch more stuff you’ll never use but which you’ll be glad to know exists. No matter what your circumstances are, there are a hundred ways that technology can help you. Not only has Green gone to the trouble of sifting through them all, trying them out, and using them with real clients, but she’s done it at least three times now that the book’s third edition was published in 2018.Can you even fathom how much work that is? Joan Green probably knows more about this stuff than anyone walking the Earth. Lucky for us, she wrote it all down in this book!Whether you’re trying to adapt to a disability like my student who used a KNFB Reader after becoming visually impaired, or never miss an explanation in difficult classes like my quadruple-major sister’s double-major ex-boyfriend who swore by his Livescribe Smartpen, or listen to a human voice read your school materials at adjustable speeds using Voice Dream Reader, Assistive Technology in Special Education will save you a ton of googling.

Title: Many of the resources included can be found free online and/or already “hidden” on devices many families already own.
Review: As a child psychologist in private practice and nationally recognized digital parenting expert, I owe Joan Green a debt of gratitude for the time and dedication required to write and update this valuable resource. Ms. Green has done her homework and we are the beneficiaries. Written as a resource guide, Assistive Technology in Special Education 3rd Edition is chock full of important and, for many parents, hidden tools and software applications to help our students achieve. As technology advances, this updated guide provides its readers detailed instructions as to where and how to access the resources to help with a wide range of academic and functional skills. In fact, many of the resources included can be found free online and/or already “hidden” on devices many families already own. Ms. Green’s legwork will be appreciated by parents, teachers, and/or therapists assisting students with communication and learning or attention weaknesses, particularly as she guides her readers to specific websites, devices and applications. I share this book with parents in my clinical office, school meetings, and parenting workshops (both online and in person) with excitement, and parents express relief that Ms. Green understands their struggle as she provides clear and active support. Check out the preview and you will quickly see your student’s needs in the chapter headings. The digital world presents its challenges for all families, and Ms. Green has thoughtfully organized many technology advancements to help us manage and assist our students.Dr. Adam PletterChild Psychologistiparent101.com

Title: This book has the resources to help every special education educator including PARENTS!!
Review: As a retired special educator who helps mentor first-year special education teachers in rural Maine, I was struck at how informative and thorough this book is. If you are a special educator or parent, you do not have to feel like you are alone as you proceed on the journey of finding the best resources for your student. Ms. Green explains repeatedly that as you proceed on this journey there is not one specific road map or one correct way to find the best assistive technology device, website, software, or app. I highly recommend this book for first-year teachers, parents and veteran educators. This book will get you and your student headed in the right direction!

Title: One of the most useful books for recommending technology solutions for all
Review: One of the most useful books for recommending technology solutions for all! As a clinical psychologist working with children (and adults) with a variety of conditions that affect neurodevelopment, there is a great need to find very specific recommendations that parents and schools can immediately find and use to help students maximize their potential. In this amazingly helpful book, Joan Green does the work for us all, in providing very specific recommendations (and how to find them) for technology solutions to enhance learning or accommodate the needs of all kinds of students. The book nicely breaks up recommendations based on the type of learning or communication that needs to be enhanced. There are up-to-date recommendations provided for phones, tablets, computers, and other devices, that can easily be used to help students become successful as learners, communicators, writers, organizers and readers. Very excited to use the recommendations this book provides all the time!
