Rating: 4.5/5

Yes, after trying all 14 different beans in the blind taste test, Heinz still came out on top as the winner and favourite from the judges. They give a familiar, comforting baked bean taste that feels nostalgic and reminded judges of childhood. A classic bean, although they are touch sweet compared to others that we tried.

Available from:
Tesco (£1.30/415g)
Sainsbury’s (£1.40/415g)

Aldi Bramwells baked beans

Jar of Aldi Bramwell baked beans

Rating: 4.5/5

The Aldi own-brand ‘Bramwells’ baked beans are a highly effective Heinz dupe – and just 41p a can. In the blind taste test, some judges suggested this could even be Heinz. The beans are in a rich tomato sauce with a subtle sweetness and great overall flavour.

Available from:
Aldi (41p/410g)

Bold Bean Co rich tomato baked beans

Jar of Bold Bean Co rich tomato beans

Rating: 4/5

A bougie bean option. The giant white beans are soft and creamy with a thick, passata-style sauce with a decent hit of herbs. These would still be great on toast at brunch but could also be added to stews and casseroles for instant depth of flavour.

Available from:
Waitrose (£3.50/325g)

Ocado baked beans

Tin of Ocado baked beans

Rating: 4/5

If you’re making regular Ocado orders, try adding some of their own-brand beans to your next shop. These look great, have soft and creamy beans and a rich sauce.

Available from:
Ocado (43p/420g)

Lidl Newgate baked beans

Tin of Lidl Newgate baked beans

Rating: 4/5

Another classic baked bean that some judges thought could be Heinz during the blind taste test. The beans are well cooked and seasoned, although there could be a stronger tomato flavour.

Available from:
Lidl (see in-store for price)

Branston baked beans

Tin of Branston baked beans

Rating: 4/5

Another classic bean offering, that some suggested tasted very similar to Heinz. It gave a familiar nostalgic flavour and was not as sweet as some others, which judges appreciated.

Available from:
Tesco (£1/410g)

Morrisons baked beans

Tin of Morrisons baked beans

Rating: 3.5/5

These have a good balance of sweetness without being too sugary. The beans are cooked well (although could be larger) and the sauce is slightly thin.

Available from:
Morrisons (42p/410g)
