Queue the holiday music and ugly Christmas sweaters—holiday party season is about to begin. In my opinion, a good party is all about the tabletop spreads. Our cranberry whipped feta dip rocked the Internet last year, so we’re coming back with a cranberry-topped whipped cream cheese spread—it’s so luxurious, it’s almost sinful. There are two easy parts to make this dip pop: the tangy sweet cranberry sauce finished with brandy, and a lemony whipped cream cheese layer. Here are a few tips to consider while making it.
- Fresh or frozen cranberries: I used both frozen and fresh cranberries while testing, and they both work interchangeably. I found the fresh cranberries broke down a little more than frozen, so it depends on whether or not you’re looking for more or less texture in your sauce.
- Cream cheese temperature: Make sure the cream cheese is chilled and softened but not super cold. It should be somewhat pliable when whipping to avoid lumps; this will ensure the mixture is light and airy. A little heavy cream will loosen the mixture if it’s too thick.
- The lemon zest: I found that the salty creamy cream cheese layer needed a little more. If you get a bite of cream cheese on a cracker, it shouldn’t be one dimensional. Adding a touch of lemon zest makes it more palatable.
Storage:
Store the cream cheese spread with or without the cranberry sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Ingredients
- 2 c.
fresh or frozen cranberries, thawed
- 5 Tbsp.
granulated sugar
- 2 Tbsp.
brandy
- 2
(8-oz.) pkg. cream cheese, room temperature
- 6 Tbsp.
heavy cream
- 2 tsp.
finely grated lemon zest
- 1/4 tsp.
kosher salt
- 1 Tbsp.
sliced almonds or crushed walnuts
- 2 tsp.
finely sliced scallions
- 1/2 tsp.
freshly ground black pepper (optional)
Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling
Assorted crackers or bagel chips, for serving
- Step 1In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, bring cranberries, sugar, and 1/2 c. cold water to a simmer. Cook, stirring occasionally, until liquid has reduced into a thickened saucy consistency and cranberries have burst, 12 to 14 minutes.
- Step 2Add brandy and cook, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid is evaporated, about 2 minutes more. Transfer to a medium heatproof container or bowl and let cool.
- Step 3Meanwhile, in a large bowl, using a handheld mixer on low speed (or in the large bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment), beat cream cheese, heavy cream, lemon zest, and salt, increasing speed to high, until smooth and fluffy, about 1 minute.
- Step 4Dollop cream cheese mixture into a serving bowl. Spoon cranberry sauce over. Sprinkle with almonds and scallions; season with pepper (if using). Drizzle with oil. Serve with crackers alongside.
