Title: A Nice Device, Needs 3 AAAs
Review: This is a nice mobile style AAC tool for those who have challenges speaking or are autistic. I like that it comes in a cute little pouch that one can carry around with them. I wish that this device was rechargeable as it can be hard to keep track of AAA batteries. However, it still works pretty nicely. You can turn the sound up to a good volume in order to use it.I think my favorite feature is the recording feature. This allows the user to record whatever they would like. Honestly, a device with even more recording options would be awesome in the future for this company. To record you simply hold down the record button and wait to hear multiple beeps and then you record and let go. It’s pretty simple! It does have good amount of staple options in terms of words without the recording option. So that is very nice.The device is pretty lightweight not too heavy, which can be good since it will be easy to carry. So hopefully it will last a good amount of time. I also like the edge that has waves on it as it makes it easier to hold. It is a pretty good tool and very clever. It is nice to have something slim and more mobile than other AAC devices. Excellent concept! I recommend.

Review: KidBloom AAC Device for AutismWe received this device for Autism from Kidbloom and overall, we found it to be an adequate mid-tech communication tool for certain situations.One of the strengths is the thoughtful design. The color-coding by category is especially helpful and not something we often see, this was a standout feature. The inclusion of emotions is also a big positive, as it supports early expression in a meaningful way. The icons are generally clear, and the grooves on the side make it easier for larger hands to hold.That said, after trying it out more closely (with input from my daughter, who is a speech-language pathologist), there are some important limitations to consider, especially if you are thinking about this as a primary communication system.The biggest concern is that the device does not support robust language. It works for basic messages (e.g., “I’m hungry”), but it doesn’t allow for more specific or flexible communication. For example, a child cannot indicate what they want to eat (crackers vs. apples), which is a key part of language development. Similarly, one of the buttons says “I want my toy,” but there is no way for a child to clarify which toy they mean. As my daughter pointed out, children benefit from access to a wide range of vocabulary early on, and this device is best used as a supplemental tool rather than a primary communication system.There are also some usability concerns. When the device is placed on a flat surface, the buttons can be very difficult to press, and the recording buttons are even more challenging.
