Title: Love this thing!
Review: My first gen Nook was finally due for an upgrade. Looked at Kindle and decided to go the Kobo route for a few reasons:1. EPUB support. Most of my library is that format so that was a must-have. I also wanted the freedom to be away from Amazon ecosystem2. Warm light. Compared to Kindle, this costs about the same a Basic but adds warm light (great for low light reading)3. Size. 6” screen is sweet spot for me and what I was used to compared to Nook. Very portable and lightweight.4. Screen. Great quality reading – most modern readers are really good, this has the latest Carta 1300.5. Water resistant. Not a must have but a nice to have for sure.6. Price. Make sure you look at the “no ad” price for Kindle if you’re comparing. No, I don’t want ads on my reader.

Title: Fits in my pants pocket
Review: I had to get used to the size. I went from an 8 inch kobo forma to this 6 inch Clara. I miss the bigger size af first but I’m getting used it. I put some grip tape on the back to help it from slipping when I’m holding it. The forma was stickier and not as slick as this one. The screen looks great, brightness, color. Can’t complain about anything. Also has the benefit of fitting in my pants pocket so I carry it around more than I did my forma.

Title: Perfect gift!
Review: I got this for my husband and he loves it! It’s light, fits perfectly in his hand, and the battery life is pretty good (especially when compared to my iPad)! Kobo has lots of free books so If you’re looking for easy, “guilty pleasure” reads then this is great!

Title: Review after 6 month of usage
Review: The device is doing great, had really probably zero issues. But: I’ve installed KoReader on it, so had several issues with it’s updates. Actually that is also not an issue: after updating the reader’s firmware – you just have to refresh KoReader too. This thing is way more open then Kindle devices: there are already plugins like ChatGPT for it. Ah, the only thing I really miss from the Kindle: cloud sync between devices. Sometimes I have only phone in hands and want to send some book to the device – just can’t. Or if i want to continue reading some – you can, but it’s difficult: you have to sync exact book version with KoReader on the phone.

Title: Dead pixel!
Review: Was really happy with it until I noticed a dead pixel on my screen as I was setting it up :(Because I bought it from BlueProton on Amazon, Rakuten/Kobo could not help me and directed me to Amazon. Amazon could not help me because I bought 3rd party. Lesson learned.Only gave me the option for a return and not a replacement. I bought it for $129.99 and as of writing this, it is sold out on kobo’s website and selling here for over $140!At first they were only giving me a return option where I have to pay postage (for a defective product) but finally got an option to do it at UPS which I did. After some research I found out that dead pixels are unfortunately common with the Kobos. It’s a great product otherwise. I’d personally suggest you buy it from Kobo’s own website so that you have actual access to support if you have an issue like I did. Please learn from my lesson and don’t buy 3rd party!! Maybe the other 3rd party retailers are better but BlueProton is awful.EDIT: Just want to clarify, I loved the actual format, layout, and UI of the Kobo. But getting a dead pixel on arrival and awful customer service support definitely soured my experience. I will buy another one in hopes the screen is okay but will be doing so from another retailer, just not from 3rd party Amazon. Amazon has great support but they cannot do anything if it is a third party seller which I understand.

Review: I bought the Kobo Clara BW because I wanted a simple e-reader that supported all the major file types. I didn’t want to be stuck in one ecosystem. It also needed to be lightweight, compact, with a long battery life and have the ability to be useful in direct sunlight. I can happily say that it certainly excels at all of that.Out of the box the setup, updating and activation processes were straightforward and relatively easy. I was using the device in a matter of minutes.Reading for an hour or two a day at lower brightness levels is purported to allow several weeks of use between charges. Speaking of charging, it maybe takes an hour and a half to top up from a low battery level.Bonus points for the company being eco-conscious in their design philosophy. The reader is made from ocean-harvested recycled plastic and is highly repairable (you can even order specific repair kits from Kobo’s website to install yourself, if you like to tinker). There’s nothing fancy about the form factor here, just competent design and wise materials usage.Loading it up with books was as simple as plugging it into my PC and copying a folder from it to the reader. It connects with a USB-C adapter cable, which is fast becoming the standard for most electronic devices these days. As well, you can buy and download books through the built-in Kobo bookstore app. With 16gb of storage, you can put more books on this thing than you can ever possibly hope to read in a lifetime. Kobo-specific audiobooks are also supported and downloadable from their app store. To listen to them, you simply connect a bluetooth device to the reader. There aren’t a huge array of settings or options, which I actually appreciate. I wanted it for reading, not endless menu diving. That said, there are some thoughtful options available, such as choosing between tapping and/or swiping to turn pages and using ‘dark mode’ to save battery life–where the screen is black and the words are white. There’s even a mode to automatically reduce blue light when reading at night so it doesn’t mess with your circadian rhythm.Other standard features include the ability to: highlight text, look up words with the built-in dictionary, set bookmarks by tapping the upper right corner of the screen and make notes. There’s a rudimentary web browser if that means anything to you and a simple drawing app (not supported by any of the Kobo styluses), but they seem more like afterthoughts since they are buried in the ‘beta features’ section. The e-ink carta 1300 screen is very clear with good contrast. It’s super easy to adjust on the fly regarding brightness level and font size. Speaking of fonts, there are plenty to choose from and you can import more if the onboard ones aren’t to your liking. There’s even an option for making everything display as large print for those with vision impairment. Page turns are quick without the exceasive flashing and hesitating that some older e-ink readers are prone to.Book covers do take some time to load and only update as you scroll through your book list. This only has to be done once though and then they remain permanently visible the next time you scroll through. The covers are also very small in the list view, but you have the option to view them full screen when opening a new book to read. The reader is also waterproof, so there’s no fear of it getting wet at the beach or in the tub.It also tracks your usage and provides some interesting statistics about your reading habits if that interests you. Finally, with the optional case, you can set it to go into sleep mode when you close the cover and wake up when you open it again. Very convenient. All in all, this is an excellent choice for those who don’t care about fancy color screens or more robust note taking possibilities. This is a reader, first and foremost, and it excels at being that.

Review: The Kobo Clara BW is a fantastic e-reader, especially if you’re looking for something quick and flexible. Compared to the Kindle Basic, it just feels faster—page turns are smoother, and navigating through menus is more responsive overall. One of the best things about the Clara BW is the sideloading capability; you can easily add e-books in formats like EPUB, which gives you so much freedom in where you get your books.Plus, the font options are amazing. You can tweak everything—size, weight, line spacing—and even load up new fonts if you have a favorite. For anyone who likes to personalize their reading experience, the Kobo Clara BW is a solid choice that really delivers on both speed and customization.
