Title: Good value, though user documentation could be more helpful
Review: I needed a speakerphone with Caller ID display, and this model was by far the most reasonably priced of those I saw at amazon. That it’s powered solely by the telephone cable was a bonus. That it has large buttons (that show only the digits–no letters) was acceptable. When I opened the box, among the first things I noticed was that the user’s manual could have been from Lilliput. When fully unfolded, it measures roughly 3.5 inches tall by 8 inches wide. The type might be the smallest I’ve seen in printed matter, with capital letters less than a millimeter tall. Although I can read the print without strain, I can’t fathom why a phone that’s marketed to vision-impaired users would have such tiny type in its user’s manual. The manual gives the model as C05, but it doesn’t give the manufacturer or any contact information, which I found peculiar. The content and writing style also leave much to be desired.Under the heading “2. Ringtone selection and ringtone volume adjustment”, the manual says, “The side switch of the telephone can select the ringtone and adjust the ringtone HI or LO”. The phone does indeed have a side switch, but HI and LO are its only settings, which seems to provide no way to select the ringtone. Displaying the phone’s corresponding submenu seemed to indicate, contrary to the above quote, that even the ringtone’s volume is set using the keypad rather than the side switch.I hesitated to investigate further because the display for that submenu was a string of numbers and unrecognizable characters that made me regret not having taken a course in Sanskrit. However, after contacting the seller brought quick and friendly but ultimately uninformative replies, I decided to experiment further, having learned by now how to reset to defaults if something went wrong.I soon realized that the indecipherable string contained abbreviations for the three-part submenu, where some letters were incompletely formed because they were fashioned using segments that were designed only for digits. I then listened to the ringtones and selected one of the alternatives to the default ringtone. I also set the volume to taste. The only effect I observed from moving the side switch was that setting it to HI disabled the ringtone, which was handy because previously I had been disconnecting the phone cable from the wall jack when I didn’t want the phone to ring (such as when I would be sleeping).I found in the user’s manual no mention of a way to control the volume of the speaker (which I found too loud), but placing a couple business cards over the speaker opening seems to do the trick. The speaker doesn’t transmit sound very well to the other party, but I wanted the speaker primarily so that I could listen to automated phone menus without my having to hold a handset. The display has some other information that’s not covered in the user’s manual but is nonetheless useful. For example, if the phone rang but the user failed to go off-hook, a region of the display says “NEW” to indicate this. The manual does state that holding the pound key for several seconds would then display the timestamp and phone number of the missed call(s). I find this feature handy because if I’ve been away from the phone but “NEW” isn’t showing, it’s unnecessary to go off-hook in order to discern whether I’ve been left a voicemail (in which case, I hear a stutter tone). This assumes that one promptly deletes the missed-call information, because otherwise, one might be seeing “NEW” due to one or more missed calls that one already knew about, rather than a missed call one hadn’t known about.Having resolved the above issues with the user’s manual and the design of the phone, I’m quite satisfied with this item.
