Title: LOOKEE A50 “hearing aids” have no sound adjustments aside from volume, they’re primarily amplifiers
Review: When the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approved “Over-the-Counter” (OTC) Hearing Aids, they were lobbied by manufacturers to keep the minimum requirements vague, which muddied the waters. Devices that are primarily sound amplifiers can be sold as hearing aids. Amplifiers simply amplify whatever sounds the microphones pick up, sometimes processing the sound a bit, but the output doesn’t really improve hearing clarity for even a mild hearing issue. Unfortunately, the LOOKEE model A50 is primarily a sound amplifier.Disclaimer, I have mild hearing loss, (high-frequency loss from being exposed to loud sounds earlier in life—the most common form of “hearing loss”). I’ve worn mid-priced hearing aids for a couple of years. I’m in the market for a backup pair, if my normal ones get lost or damaged.The LOOKEE A50 hearing aids have no sound adjustments at all, aside from volume. I took off my hearing aids and put the new ones in, and adjusted the volume. I was watching the news on TV. The first thing I noticed was the hollowness/muddieness of the sound. It had no low end or high end — like AM radio. Anything high-pitched was distorted. It was echoey, hard to understand what was said. I adjusted the volume again and again, no improvement. I finally took them out, and immediately noticed I could hear more clearly without them in my ears! I tried over and over again, for the rest of the evening — no improvement. To be fair, the following day I decided to use the LOOKEE’s all day, trying to see if they had any value as a back-up if my aids get lost or damaged. It was not a pleasant day. Only with the volume near the lowest level was the experience tolerable. Everyone I talked to sounded distorted when they reached a higher pitch, and the sound was randomly echoey. In a noisy environment, I had to remove them. I honestly felt I could hear better without them. The following day I went back to my old aids, and the difference was monumental.In my opinion, hearing aids with no sound shaping adjustments whatsoever, have very limited use — the limitation is built-in. True hearing aids can be closely adjusted to your specific hearing loss. Only a hearing test can accurately detect what you need. Most OTC hearing aids have some adjustments. They typically use a smartphone App to control the aids. Many Apps offer a simple hearing test to help you (and them) adjust the aids to be more beneficial. Usually, the cheaper the hearing aid, the fewer adjustments are available. Typically, only hearing aids over $1500 can be custom-tuned to your hearing test results. Despite what some OTC Hearing Aid makers claim in their advertising, personalized customization makes a noticeable difference, but it comes at a premium.That said, above-average OTC hearing aids can be very helpful if they are somewhat customizable. Also, above-average OTC hearing aids have better noise reduction technology — which is important. Probably the biggest issue with ALL hearing aids, regardless of price, is the ability to enhance the speech of someone near you in a noisy environment, while suppressing background noise. The LOOKEE A50 claims to have some built-in noise-reduction, and they probably do, but it doesn’t significantly reduce background noise in a meaningful way.My biggest concern is someone with mild hearing loss will try a device like the $300 LOOKEE A50, and conclude hearing aids will not help them. That would be tragic, because better hearing aids will help you, often dramatically…

Title: First Option before Spending Thousands
Review: I got these hearing aid/earbuds to help manage my mild hearing loss. I may be old enough to need a hearing aid, but I don’t have to advertise it. I love these because they look like modern technology, there’s no squealing. They are easy to use easy to travel with and stay charged for a long, long time. If you’re not ready to go and pay thousands of dollars to the audiologist for hearing aids, give these a try I highly recommend them.

Title: Not good with a lot of background noise
Review: These aren’t terrible but also they aren’t great. I have a decent amount of hearing loss and need to get hearing aids but I keep pushing it off because they are pricey. These work decently well in a very controlled environment whithout a lot of ambient noise. They work well for watching tv or talking to my husband at home. But the places I need it at the most like a restaurant or talking with a group, these were basically useless. Too much background noise makes it almost harder to hear while using the. So many ll continue to use these for when I’m at home so I don’t have to blast the volume on my tv but that’s about it

Review: This is a superb, reasonably priced hearing aid The LED screen tells you the charge available. They look like earbuds for listening to a cell phone, so they don’t advertise the fact that they are hearing aids. They are ready to use 2 seconds after you take them out of the case. They have 5 preset volume levels on each ear. The quality of the sound is as good or better than conventional hearing aids, without the hassle of having plugged ears. I am very glad that I bought mine.

Review: A great idea for a hearing aid, which Apple and other companies are using with their ear pods. Unfortunately, these hearing aids have a number of flaws. Firstly extracting the hearing aids from the charging case can be a real pain for seniors with poor grip. Secondly the user can hear their own voice as well as that of the TV or person they are listening too. The volume control is a little button, which is easy to touch whilst installing the hearing aids. This has the tendency to turn the high volume on. On the plus side, these hearing aids do work. Like all hearing aids one must wear them for at least a week for the brain to adjust to the new sounds. This proved impossible for the senior I bought them for. She kept on losing them as they fell out of hers too easily. There is no mobile phone app to allow adjustment.
