Pleasantly surprised by Kempten’s Incredible History and Charm!
Have you ever driven past a place countless times without stopping—only to later discover it’s an absolute gem? That was our experience with Kempten, a charming town in the Allgäu region of Bavaria in Germany that completely surprised us.
Known as the oldest town in Germany with a recorded history, dating back to the Roman settlement of Campodunum, Kempten is packed with history, culture, and Bavarian charm. We explored the lively Rathausplatz, admired the stunning architecture around St. Mang’s Square, and were blown away by the extravagant Baroque interiors of the basilica of St Lorenz as well as the Kempten Residence. Every corner of Kempten revealed something unique and unforgettable.
But it wasn’t just the history and landmarks that impressed us. The food in Kempten was outstanding—we enjoyed a delicious Allgäuer dinner with local specialties—and the warm, welcoming people made us feel right at home.
Kempten might not be one of the “big-name” Bavarian towns like Munich or Nuremberg, but that’s exactly why you should visit. Don’t make the mistake we did for years—don’t just drive by, stop and discover this hidden gem in Bavaria’s Allgäu!
