Title: Handy size and very useful scales. Sturdy but flexibile.
Review: This is a well made, eighteen inch ruler that has a black background, with laser etched marks and numbers. The etchings are deep enough to be able to feel them, with crisp edges. The edges of the ruler is crisp and sharp, but not to the point that you can get a cut along the edge; sharp enough to make clean lines if using it with drafting. The ruler is stiff and flexible, but yet when flexed with a 4 inch plus arch, it returns to its flat state. The product page indicates that this should have black lettering on a white background, which must have been for a different product. The product page also calls this a machinist square, which should have a right angled layout instead of just a straight “ruler”. The photos on the product page is accurate and matches what is shown in my photos. This ruler is 18 inches long as indicated. It does not have any margins on the ends. It has no holes in it’s surface (no way to hang it up). The width is 1.200 inches. The thickness is 0.034 inches. The product page indicates that this is a temped stainless steel ruler. It’s also very magnetic, so it is probably a stainless alloy that is low in nickel, or nickel free.On this ruler, the background is a black finish which easily shows finger prints and smudges. But it’s very durable and does not show any signs of scratching even when marred with sharp edged tools, such as my steel calipers. I’m sure it will scratch if you try, but just with taking a number of measurements, I noticed the sharp edges of the caliper was dragging along the black surface without leaving any marks.I like the four different scales, each of which gets it’s own dedicated edge, instead of trying to double up the scales. As a result, even with the 1/50th or 1/64th scale its easy to read.Overall this is a great ruler, with very accurate measurements and it’s designed and built to last. The only issue I am able to observe with it, is with the way it shows finger prints and smudges of oil from your hand. In strong light it’s not an issue, but in softer light the smudges can refract the light in an odd way that produces a glare. Maybe a good cleaning could remove that layer of oils and waxes.

Title: Good contrast and material construction. A little sharp.
Review: I like the idea of this ruler but there are a few things that would make it better.I really like the sharp contrast of the white letters, numbers and lines against the black color of the ruler. It makes it incredibly easy to see and read. The fact that it has different units of measurement on each side is another efficient touch.I’m worried about the finish on this ruler. It is easy to put fingerprints on it and also is very prone to getting light scratches on it. Over time im worried how much the black finish will degrade over time and indirectly reduce the contrast of the white on black.Additionally, the edges on my particular ruler are very sharp. I can feel it on my fingertips and I worry that it would cut my skin open if I wasn’t careful. It would be nice if it was just slightly sanded down a bit to address this.

Title: Excellent Quality Ruler with Crisp and Clear Graduations
Review: I’ll be using this primarily as a layout ruler in my wood shop. The white on black laser engraved markings are clear and crisp and easy to read even at the smallest graduations, which given my 65 year old’s eyesight is impressive. The ruler appears to be made of blued spring steel and is quite flexible despite the product listing it as “rigid” but I don’t really see that as a negative for my use case. The product description lists it as being “rust-proof”. My shop can get a pretty humid in the summer so time will tell how well it actually holds up against rusting. The price was $26 at the time I placed my order and has since gone up to $35. At $26 it was a bit pricy but still worth the cost. At $35, I probably would have considered other options. Cost aside, I really like it and certainly would order it again (assuming it was under $30). And as an added bonus it’s made in the USA!

Title: This Rule Works Well in Low Light Conditions
Review: This flexible measuring device is useful and accurate. The black color of the rule really helps in low light environments. The white etchings against the black, standout well when using in darker areas of my garage. A standard rule with black etchings is more difficult to read in those conditions. The black rule can become hard to read in bright conditions when a light source is reflecting into the user’s eye.I prefer to use the backside of the rule with the 10ths and 50ths of an inch. I find it faster to do any math/calculations of my measurements using decimals of an inch compared to using fractions of an inch.I tested this PEC rule against a Starrett 12″ combination square rule. Lining up the 32nds of each rule to each other, resulted in all marks lining up correctly with no deviations. I use my Starrett rule to test accuracies of other measuring tools.

Title: Not really for woodworkers
Review: Now to be fair I’m not a Machinist, I’m a woodworker. As a woodworker this is not the best ruler for me. It’s difficult to read and the increments are not especially helpful since all of my tools, including my laser cutter/etcher use metric so imperial measurements are not helpful and this ruler does not have metric measurements. I do use it upon occasion but not as much as other I have around the shop.

Title: Awesome, narrow ruler
Review: This is a really nice ruler. It is thin and narrow, very flexible, and the markings are perfect. I see no reason not to get this ruler if you are in need of one. It is made in USA, so you can feel good about keeping your purchase in the country. I actually have 3 rulers by these guys now, including a 6 inch version, and a 150cm metric version. I love them all.

Title: Flexible, accurate
Review: Decent flexible ruler. Bend radius feels it could go down to about 6″ without damage, 8″ seems more comfortable. I checked the ruler against a Starrett and it’s accurate; no surprise there because PEC is a decent brand. What I’m not very happy with is the white-on-black markings. The black wears off easily; there were scratches all over and some of the marking were even worn down just from jostling around in the shipping package. In a fab shop, it’s not going to last very long…I’d recommend the silver-with-black markings model instead of this one.
