Raymond’s Checklist for Gear for a Long Hike (Raymond’s Chec…

REQUIRED READING BEFORE PACKING UP FOR ANY LONG-DISTANCE HIKE. WELL-WRITTEN AND METICULOUSLY DONE BY THE FORMER RECORD HOLDER OF THE FKT FOR THE PCT.

Another suitable title for this book is Zen and the Art of Backpacking.

This second edition is revised and much improved. It contains 50% new material. The book contains guidelines for setting Fastest Known Times (FKTs). The guidelines provided are sufficient to guarantee that any hike which follows the recommended guidelines is indeed a FKT.

The author completed the triple-crown of hiking consisting of the 2,169-mile long Appalachian Trail in 1995 in 97 days with his friend Peter “Fish-out-of-Water” Solomon, the 2,650-mile long Pacific Crest Trail in 2003 solo and unsupported in a FKT of 83 days, and the Continental Divide Trail in 2015 solo and unsupported in 100 days via a 2,800-mile long no-gaps Mexican-border to Canadian-border route. In 2017 he thru-hiked the 780-mile long Via Dinarica White Trail through Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Albania with his friend Glenn “Fiddlehead” Fleagle in 53 days. In 2018 he completed a supported, 725-mile hike across Thailand in a FKT of 22 days from the country’s easternmost to its westernmost point. He traveled in 160+ countries and territories, and visited 180+ islands. The author hiked in most of those locations. He climbed six of the seven summits and has been on many expeditions all over the world. He ran 100,000+ miles and much of it on trails. The author has the expertise and experience to give a highly informed and useful opinion about hiking gear.

The author provides detailed lists of his gear and the precise weights of individual items. He gives subtotals for various categories of gear. The book describes issues relating to food and beverages during a hike. There is a chapter on female-specific gear. In the anecdotes there are many pearls of wisdom. This revised edition includes more details about the author's mega hikes and hiking bucket list. Whether or not you intend to hike in a lightweight style, this book will provide valuable insights and information for consideration in gear selections for your next long-distance hike.

"If Bill Bryson and Katz had read this book first, they might have finished the Appalachian Trail."

"The author is clear that every hiker must hike their own hike, but I plan to adapt some of his methods."

"Although I'm not a minimalist, I took away a few pound-saving measures. I'll revisit his gear lists from time-to-time. Great read!"

"Congratulations, Wall, on another great book in the Raymond's Checklist Series!"
