Title: Well written good story with in-depth characters
Review: This was the best crime and mystery book that I have read in a long time. The story is different than the run-of-the-mill genre, and the book manages to provide substantial interest and background for all the principal characters. There will be a fair number of them that most readers will really care about. The book has multiple mysteries or crimes going on, and yet they are all related and relevant to the main theme. Most readers will be wondering about how the book will end until . . . yes, until the end. The author starts to unravel various of the mysterious circumstances over the last 10-15% of the book; yet, there still are things to maintain interest right through the last page. The quality of writing is excellent. Although the phrase is over-used, this book is a page turner for all of its 480 or so pages. I alternated reading the book and listening to the audiobook. The book narrator is excellent–she has a different voice for all the characters, and her voices are appropriate and believable. She’s an interesting story teller with a fantastic book to read.

Title: Like a Great Movie with a Disappointing Ending
Review: What a pager turner. Worthy of a comparison to Kate Atkinson. The layers, the nuance, the character development – all outstanding and what an art it is to put together a plot like this and tie it all together. The perspective Liz Moore has from a character viewpoint is amazing. These are not cardboard cutout characters.***Spoiler Alert! But after the big search, the junior investigator Judy finds Barbara and just says “are you ok, do you want me to leave you alone?” Hard to believe, and one logistic concern – how did Judy get promoted on solving that case? Go back and tell everyone Barbara is alive and well but wants to be left alone?

Title: A Masterly Crafted, Well-Written Whodunnit
Review: The God of the Woods lives up to the hype. It’s a masterfully crafted, well-written whodunnit filled with well laid out clues and cleverly placed red herrings. The answers are all there, it’s just a matter of putting the pieces together. I’m usually good at figuring out ‘who did it,’ but not in this case. When all is revealed you’re like “Duh, of course! Why didn’t I put that together?” At least it’s was that way for me.Be forewarned that this is not a happy book. It involves missing children and the majority of the characters are unlikeable, but you cheer for the likable ones. That being said, you need to know what happens so you keep guessing and turning those pages.I was the only one in my book club that gave it five stars most others gave it four with a few threes thrown in, because they didn’t like the ending. I, however, thought both conclusions were fitting and made sense given everything we learned. The God of the Woods is a good choice for a buddy read or a book club, because you want to talk about it when you finish it.

Title: Good storyline. Complicated characters
Review: This was a good multi-generational story about a rich family. Because of the multigenerational storylines, it does jump back and forth in the timeline a lot. But they mark the jumps with years to help you know where the story is in time. The characters are complex and well developed. But because it’s a mystery and there are sooooo many characters, I did struggle keeping track of who was who and how they were interconnected. Because of this, I made the character list below. I’m including it here in the review in case it helps others. Don’t worry. No spoilers here:Alice Van Laar (Ward)- from affluent family in NY. sister is Delphine. Married Peter Van Laar. Title: Very well written; captivating.
Review: I enjoyed this book from start to finish. It was filled with great characters, all distinct and having depth, struggling in their normal lives as tragedy and scandal affect their rustic small town. This was an exploration of the corruption of great wealth, and the tenacity of regular folks. An amazing story.

Review: Liz Moore just easily became my new favorite author. I was skeptical at first, having been let down by many a crime thrillers either big (very obvious) twists. I can honestly say that I didn’t see this coming, and though it wasn’t the massive twist that I thought would come, it was the perfect reveal that we didn’t know we needed. This was a true pager turner that I didn’t want to put down. I would fall asleep to it every night because I didn’t want to close it. Liz kept you hooked until the very last word and if I was a person that cried (it’s hard for me to cry) I would have been balling at how justice was served, without tying a cute little bow on it. Please do yourself a favor and read this book.
