A Today Show #ReadwithJenna Book Club Pick
A propulsive and uncommonly wise novel about one unexpected wedding guest and the surprising people who help her start anew.
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She’s immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for…

Title: Don’t be put off by the summary!
Review: To describe the plot of this story might scare you off. It might make you think “There is no way this will work. There is no way I will like this!” But it does work. And you will *love* it. Just trust me.It has the vibe of a less zany, madcap Amy Poeppel novel. The characters are relatable and real and understandable and lovable. The whole thing is so heartwarming (again, you would not believe this is possible if I told you the plot, so please just trust me) and at times really laugh out loud funny, and I’ll be recommending it to everyone I love.

Title: unexpectedly pleasant
Review: This book has popped up on my “books you might like” like for some time now, and at instant it looks like a “chick flick” type of book which is totally not my style; a book where the main character goes to an island after a breakup and gets completely transformed and swooped off her feet, completely predictable and corny. And therefore, I passed on it. After finishing it-I admit this is so not what it was. First off, the author added depth to the “why” the main character is at this hotel. She has created a character that has depth as well. The character is sarcastic, smart and not corny at all. Although on a grander perspective it is exactly a book about the main character finding herself, she is more mature than most “chick flick” types and therefore, relatable for me in my 30’s and so not cringe worthy at all. Underlying themes of bravery, authenticity and transition. Will recommend!

Title: Palate cleanser
Review: What a refreshing story!! It takes place over about 6 days with little side trips into the past. It also exhausts all the emotions. There is, of course, love and loss, pain and hope, laughter and sadness, betrayal and loyalty, as well as tragedy and hopefullness. It is laugh out loud funny in places…especially about the palate cleansers! It is about family and community and faith that things will be ok in the end. (You know… If it’s not ok, it’s not the end). This book is supremely well written and pure entertainment to read. I could not put it down.

Title: Not a rom com
Review: I was surprised by the depth and authenticity of the Wedding People. After the stark beginning, the author creates an engaging story with evolving characters with insight, clever details, and humor. Her love of life, language, and literary works bring a quality of writing that is often missing today. I was so impressed that I am now reading another book, Notes on Your Sudden Disappearance, by this author, Alison Espach. I hope she will write more superb books.

Review: This book was so beautiful. Funny, moving, and satisfying. My only complaint is that some of the chapters were so long! With that being said, I did still devour this and fell in love with the characters.

Title: 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – A good, solid read
Review: Book 6/75 of 2025Stars -5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- Excellent – Highly Recommended4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – A good, solid read3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ – An okay read2 ⭐️⭐️ – Meh1 ⭐️ – Not my cup of teaPhoebe wants to end it all. She checks into a random hotel, ready to disappear, but instead, she stumbles into the chaos of a wedding party. Suddenly, she’s not just an outsider—she’s a confidante. Strangers spill their secrets, their regrets, their doubts. And Phoebe, who never expected to be part of anyone’s story again, finds herself tangled in their lives. The book is equal parts dark and tender, with sharp humor and deeply human moments. Espach masterfully captures the loneliness that lingers even in crowded rooms. While the pacing slows at times, the emotional depth makes up for it.A unique, thoughtful read—worth picking up!

Review: I didn’t really have any expectations going into this book. I saw it on a number of reviews for top books to get you out of a ready slump and it did just that for me. I was hooked, page turner and not predictable. The characters were unique and well developed.
