Title: Bricked in 3 months
Review: Other than it bricked (for which it gets one star), here’s considerations:- Poor screen quality. Viewing angle is not that good, and it is also weird – you need to position your screen not at the angle you’d expect, takes getting used to. The resolution makes today’s website banners and headers occupy unexpectedly large share of the screen.- The camera is… not good at all.- Non-backlit keyboard. Surprisingly annoying.- Doesn’t work well on 4K screens. This particular laptop was bought because CPU specs were (on paper) better than others, however, it didn’t translate into better GPU performance – 4K display is slow and choppy, this killed the intent of using a small ruggedized box with a good big screen. All of it ended with the laptop just going dead one morning – no resume, no boot, no lights.Fair disclosure: warranty RMA’s been submitted to ASUS, will post an update once it returns from service. Though, for business use it’s still inexusable – had to buy another one with overnight shipping while this one is getting repaired.

Title: Update: It actually got here
Review: Laptop runs well, functions well, installs Linux without root and does console games, telnet muds, and vim writing through that Linux well, as well as shares a folder easily with that Linux so things wrote in Vim are easy to access. Issues I’ve found relate mostly to lack of ram, 16gb preferred, 8gb is better, while 4gb is what this has, and ghosting(keyboard isn’t protected enough to not get mysterious trackpad input now and then)… An Asus gaming laptop has an anti-ghosting keyboard… I suggest that one. The temporary issue until you are used to it is the automatic 90 day website permissions removal that breaks web apps until you allow them through Chrome, which will undoubtedly be set so installed web apps are already broken until you allow them for 90 days. Still, as my first test into Chromebooks, I find the ChromeOS favorable, along with Google Play Store and Linux both a click away very convenient. I have found many reviews about writing which I find mind boggling. Through Linux on this there are many options(even on only setting up Linux you have immediate access to Vim to write with), but if it’s not through Linux, you’d have to have 24/7 internet access to have something suitable to write with. There’s an app called Writer Journal on Google Play, which is okay, if you’re shy about playing with Linux. This does run educational apps well, as they often have lower hardware requirements, including foreign language apps & sign language apps, apps for children, and some apps go full screen and run well by default. My Little Pony Story Creator(beginner storyboarding) and Wagotabi(Japanese literacy) run exquisitely. If every app ran like those two apps on this thing, you wouldn’t be able to find a better laptop. That’s not the case, though. Safe chat for kids when setup without a phone number by parents: Threema. / Unsafe chat(often used for technology help chatrooms): IRC > CoreIRC / Privacy on DNS: InviZible / Manga&Anime: Crunchyroll Anime(set age restriction for your kids, ALL, 12, or 14… using 12 on a 17 old isn’t wrong, watch it yourself and make those decisions yourself), Crunchyroll Manga/ Best Working Art Apps: RoughAnimator, ArtFlow / Working Bible: e-Sword / Time Management: Matrix: ToDo Eisenhower Matrix(in Korean, but accepts English and works in full size window nicely – this thing, wagotabi, and chrome on the taskbar while InviZible is keeping DNS private in background works for me… I add Crunchyroll with age settings on the taskbar for my kid’s sake, taskbar on right side gives a more even screen space for windows) / Chrome extensions: NoScript, DecentralEyes, uBlock Origin Scope / Taskbar Choices: a.terminal(Linux) give access to writing, programming, & telnet muds, b. roughanimator reminds you that you need to draw today, c. Cubasis 3 reminds you that you need to practice creating music today(you want 8gb ram if you have this option, but it will work if you don’t), d. Wagotabi reminds you that you need to reach first grade reading level in Japanese, e. My Little Pony Story Creator your child needs something to do. / The other real Writing App that’s not Vim… Tintero on flathub does work on this laptop through Linux / real Graphics… not enough memory… just because you can install blender through Linux doesn’t mean you should, and Google Play games are board games yes, all others iffy. Good for chess and shogi. / App conflict: Termux with Terminal…. Termux does far less than Terminal… far, far, far less. Do not install Termux.

Title: Tough, but awful screen
Review: For a laptop for schools or kids that can survive a drop, this is great. ChromeOS is limiting but fine for these use cases, and this seems likely to survive whatever kids throw at it (or throw it at). The screen, though, is among the worst I’ve ever seen. Viewing angles are extremely poor, colors are washed, and brightness is bad.

Title: Excellent
Review: As long as you understand what a Chromebook does and doesn’t do, you should be very happy with this product. This is definitely designed to hold up more than just a regular laptop which is reassuring. Chrome OS has most of its functionality in the cloud so you can run it with less onboard memory. Even laptops that don’t run in the cloud are mostly transitioning to cloud computing, so this is the future. Because you don’t need as much RAM and hard drive space, which reduces the overall price. The battery charge duration is excellent and the screen is perfectly adequate. Definitely worth considering especially if you are a Chrome OS fan.

Title: Perfect School Computer
Review: It works well. It’s built well but on the cheaper side like most Chromebook’s. It’s not too heavy or too big. Its not fast enough for gaming or anything but its a perfect school computer.
