After the Rokers have stripped an orchard of all the apples, we take our greed over to the apple-cider doughnut stand, where I order a dozen. “No, wait, two. Three. Yes, three dozen please.” A freshly baked, warm apple-cider doughnut is like the White Castle burger: When they’re fresh and hot, they’re about the greatest thing going on, but once they cool, they sink a couple of notches to meh. What to do with all the extra doughnuts? Bread pudding! Douse those babies in custard and bake, and you’ve given the doughnuts a second chance to shine and yourself a reason to overbuy next year.
Tip: If you can’t get apple-cider doughnuts, you can substitute plain cake doughnuts.
