Title: Hearing Aids
Review: In the beginning, my impulse was to turn them up and see what would happen, but that strategy ended up being unsuccessful. I was on the verge of deciding that they were not for me since everything seemed to be too crisp and distracting. Starting at a modest level in a calm environment and wearing them for short amounts of time was the ideal strategy. After that, gradually increasing the amount of time that they were worn was the next step. After I had done that, my speech became more distinct since there were no longer any little sounds from the home fighting for attention. Once I had completed a few sessions, I was able to quickly put them on and felt ready to go, rather than experiencing feelings of being overstimulated. When I was at home, I was able to have more natural discussions since I did not have to continuously fill in spaces. Without having to stop what I was doing in order to focus, I was able to carry on a conversation while I was cooking, keep up with someone who was speaking from across the room, and listen to brief remarks. The improvement in television was the most obvious day-to-day victory. The fact that I was able to maintain the volume at a more appropriate level while still being able to comprehend the discourse made the nights seem more relaxed and less exhausting. There were also fewer instances in which I was able to estimate what someone had said and subsequently realize that my assumption was incorrect.
