A dismembered corpse is discovered in the vault of a silver shop. The police initially believe it to be that of a convicted armed robber – but not everyone agrees with that theory. One of them is Decima Mullins, who calls on the help of private detective Cormoran Strike as she’s certain the body in the silver vault was that of her boyfriend – the father of her newborn baby – who suddenly and mysteriously disappeared.

The more Strike and his business partner Robin Ellacott delve into the case, the more labyrinthine it gets. The silver shop is no ordinary…, 4.5,

Title: Complex and worthy addition to the series
Review: JKR/RG is back with a signature complex pageturner. What sets her apart as an author is her strengths in so many aspects of writing, where most authors might really excel at one or two. Plotting, pacing, character development, and above all else, dialogue (which has ruined me for practically any other writer – everyone else sounds stilted and contrived compared to her.) This mystery is super complicated which is great, because I plan to listen and read it multiple times just like I have with all the others.THM really delivers on the Strike-Robin saga as well – ups, downs, and real progress in that department – as well as in other relationships we’ve all been speculating about. This installment really devotes equal time to interpersonal affairs and the central mystery. And we’ve got some new enemies and allies in the mix with real staying power. I was wondering where we’d find our conflict without Charlotte, and now we’ve got our answer. As for the paper quality, I’m in the minority but I actually like it. The pages aren’t like onion skin – they’re perfectly legible in my copy and what I really like is that the book rests open regardless of how uneven you are into the page count when you rest it on a table. Typically, with thicker pages, I’d have to rest a weight on the book and fiddle around with it to keep it open if I want to go hands-free. These pages rest open, which is an upgrade. Plus, it’s lighter than it would be with the thicker paper. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this addition to the cannon and loved how dense and complex it was so I can restart right away!

Title: Good Book – not my favorite of the series
Review: Coming off the previous book in this series, I was a little let down. Robin in the cult and all of the drama in that book is going to be hard to top. This one had lots of characters to keep track of and relationships to sort out. It was interesting but a slower read. I did love the ending and who everyone turned out to be. I am sick of the Robin and Strike unspoken love storyline.

Title: Much better than the previous two in this series…enjoyable read
Review: Thought long and hard before giving this 5 stars. Why? Compared to her last two Strike books, this one is way better in so many ways. This one harkens back to the earlier books in the Strike series in many ways. So I bumped it from 4 to 5 mainly for that reason. I still have some reservations about giving it 5 stars. Mainly the story/plot arc is just too convoluted and the little Robin/Strike repressed love story has gotten long in the tooth and has become repetitive and tedious with many scenarios being replayed over and over…

Title: Momentum
Review: The Hallmarked Man is not a favorite, but I applaud its complex story and cast of characters (even though I had to go back often to determine who was who) and how Strike and Robin’s personal story moved forward. Not an easy task following the conclusion of The Running Grave.Reading the entire series in order is probably the best way to enjoy this 8th book in particular. It reaches back into previous stories and characters more than any of the others in my view. The use of actual locations (such as Sark and several pubs — The Engineer, The Falcon, The Prince of Wales), which I paused reading to look up to get a feel for where Strike and Robin meet or hang out, makes the story more compelling. I’ve heard JK Rowling say she visits these places which is probably why she can bring them to life so vividly. The terrorist attack on Westminster Bridge is another example of reality feeding fiction.Another location, the Denmark Street agency office stairwell, is a prominent location for big plot developments from the very beginning of the series. So interesting to see that particular spot incorporated once again in a significant way in The Hallmarked Man.There are tough scenes that crop up in all the Strike novels, but The Hallmarked Man in particular has sections that were difficult to read. I make a special effort not to let them ruin my enjoyment of the rest of the book.JK Rowling did an excellent interview series in three parts called “On Writing.” In Part One, she said she wrote the final chapter of book 8 (The Hallmarked Man) first, not her usual approach. But she knew where she was heading. She said, “It’s a very important final chapter for the whole series. I doubt any word of it would change. It’s completely formed.”I get that now.

Title: The best yet
Review: I get this series in ebook and audio book. It is my favorite series. Book 8 “The Hallmarked Man” is the best yet. The characters are evolving wonderfully and the team is growing wonderfully. It’s the whole picture of real people with flaws and histories. This most recent book expanded on those histories in a way that I found realistic and sometimes delightful. No spoilers, but there are some great scenes. In addition, the “reader”, Robert Glenister is top rate. He doesn’t read – he performs – wonderfully! I am anxiously waiting for the next book.

Title: Love the book, hate the epigraphs
Review: I am the only one who is sick to bloody death of the epigraphs?Epigraphs – those little quotes from other authors at the beginning of each chapter – are a somewhat antiquated tradition that seems to serve no better purpose than to show off the author’s erudition. In Rowling’s case, the quoted authors are rarely either as famous or as talented as Galbraith/Rowling herself – how could they be? – and the quotes are far too obscure to offer any meaningful insights into the chapter at hand. Frankly, I find them not only extremely boring, but interruptive of the flow of the work I am trying to read, and in which I actually have some interest. And after having suffered through these unwanted and irrelevant distractions in eight books, I have finally hit my limit. And now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, The Hallmarked Man is intriguing, well written, and in every respect a worthy entry in this series.

Review: Brilliant as ever, I almost didn’t go to bed last night in order finish it.Strike/Robin though! How manyPotter books did she write? I suppose Strike could go on for ever and eventually she might give us a break and marry them off. It’s just that we have to wait another two years to find out – rats. The writing as ever is rich and inventive and the story grabs from the start and holds on tight. My only gripe about that is that she insists on phonetic accents. So unnecessary. If we are told someone is cockney/scottish/posh etc., we are quite capable using our imagination to fill in the accent. It looks daft on the page to see all the lack of normal speech. I wish she would stop.Anyway, another bit of great story telling, she earns her pennies (on the assumption she remembers. what one is)

Review: Cracking story. Complex, plot lines aplenty and a compelling read/ listen. I had concerns with the length of the book as I found the previous story with Robyn in the cult long and boring. However Rowling has cracked the secret of writing a long complex story. The “ who did it element” of the story was impressive. I never guessed who murdered the person in the vault until the reveal. Robyn’s relationship with Ryan is taking on a theme of the silly move to marry Matthew. Poor Robyn her boyfriend picker is definitely off. Notably with the luscious Cormaran right there for the plucking. Read the book or listen to the audio book. Robert Glenister is a marvelous narrator.
